What is Yoga? (Easy yoga understanding)
Yoga is an inner journey.
It helps us move our awareness from the body to our soul and true self.
Yoga is not just stretching or exercise — it is a system of methods that teaches us how to go inward step by step.
Because it works in a very precise way, yoga is also called an inner science.
Yoga is a guided journey inside yourself, where you slowly learn more about who you really are.
Types of Yoga
There are different paths of yoga, and each helps us grow in a unique way:
- Karma Yoga – the path of action and service
- Bhakti Yoga – the path of love and devotion
- Hatha Yoga – the path of body and breath
- Tantra Yoga – the path of energy and awareness
- Dhyana Yoga – the path of meditation
- Jnana (Gyana) Yoga – the path of knowledge and wisdom
All these yoga types are tools that help us go deeper within ourselves.
Four Levels of Our Existence
According to yoga, we live in four levels:
- Body – our physical form
- Mind – thoughts and emotions
- Prana – life energy or vitality
- Consciousness – our true being or awareness
Yoga helps balance and develop all these levels.
Hatha Yoga
Hatha Yoga helps prepare your body and mind step by step for self-realization, which means understanding your true self.
You may have noticed that sometimes you breathe more through one nostril than the other.
After some time, it changes to the other nostril, and sometimes you breathe equally through both.
According to Hatha Yoga, this happens because your breath (prana) flows through three main energy channels inside the body called Ida, Pingala, and Sushumna Nadis.
These breathing patterns prepare your body and mind for three different states:
- Physical activity
- Mental activity
- Deep rest and relaxation
Hatha Yoga helps you become aware of these natural breathing changes and teaches you how to use and balance them according to your needs.
Hatha Yoga has two main parts:
- External Yoga (Preparation)
This part of yoga prepares your body and mind so that you are ready for deeper inner practices.
- Asana – Yoga Postures
These are body positions that help regulate your energy, strengthen weak parts of the body, and make it easier to sit comfortably and calmly for meditation. - Pranayama – Breathing Techniques
This is learning to become aware of your breath. It helps awaken and energize your life force and makes your mind calm and clear. - Mudra – Hand and Body Gestures
These gestures help balance and guide energy inside the body, especially toward higher energy centers (chakras). - Bandha – Energy Locks
These are special techniques that help release blocked energy from different parts of the body and chakras. - Shatkarma – Body Cleansing Practices
These are six detox methods that purify the body and mind, helping you feel lighter, cleaner, and more focused.
All of these practices help make the body healthy, stable, and ready for deeper yoga.
- Internal Yoga (The Real Journey)
This is where yoga truly becomes an inner journey — working directly with your mind and awareness.
- Pratyahara – Turning the Senses Inward
This is learning to withdraw attention from outside distractions and bring awareness inside your body and inner experience. - Dharana – Concentration
This is training your mind to focus — on the breath, body sensations, thoughts, emotions, or any chosen object. - Dhyana – Meditation
This is a deeper state where you are aware of both your inner world and outer experience at the same time, calmly and clearly. - Samadhi – Deep Peace and Oneness
This is a state of deep inner peace where you feel completely connected with your true being.
Why is the Body Important?
Yoga teaches that the body is like a vehicle.
If the vehicle is not working properly, how can we go on a long journey?
So, yoga first helps us take care of the body and mind, so that we can experience inner peace and silence.
Simple Discipline for a Healthy Life
Both physical and mental health can be maintained by simple daily habits:
- Wake up early (drink Luke warm water 2 to 3 glass)
- Sleep early
- Do your morning routines calmly and properly
- Exercise regularly
Always follow this simple order:
Start with basic joint movements – gently move and loosen your joints to warm up the body.
Then do energy-regulating exercises (like Shakti Sanchalan Kriya) – to activate and balance your energy.
Only after that, do proper stretching and yoga postures – so your body becomes flexible and relaxed safely.
- Eat healthy food
Try to eat more natural and fresh foods. Include a balanced amount of fruits, vegetables, and grains in your meals.
Avoid foods that make your body feel heavy, dull, or sleepy.
Drink clean water
Sip clean water regularly — about one glass every hour — to stay fresh and energized.
- Meditate every day and include awareness in daily activities
